Art Quilting Workshop: An Introduction to Improvisation
with Denise Roberts
Saturday, Aug. 13, 9 am–12 pm
$50 members, $65 non-members
Intermediate quilters are invited to learn improvisational art quilting with Material Pulses artist and WV quilter Denise Roberts! This workshop will introduce those familiar with traditional quilting to improvisational techniques. Students will create rectangles within rectangles, making units that can be arranged and pieced on a black fabric background. A second workshop may be added in the afternoon for additional students. Advanced registration is required as space is limited.
Students should bring:

Portable sewing machine and owner’s manual
Basic tools: new needles for your sewing machine model, rotary cutter, straight pins, fabric scissors, small spray bottles, stiletto, tooth brush, cell phone with camera
Thread: neutral grey
Fabric: ½ yard black fabric and a variety of colored fabrics. This is your personal choice – bring what you can and we will make it work! Suggest bringing solid colors. Please prewash all fabric, and bring the following lengths: Fat ¼ cuts (22 x 22”) or 1/4 yd (9 x 44”). Suggested colors (come with 9 of each): Lights/Brights like Bright Red, Orange, Acid Yellow, Lime, Turquoise, Blue, Apple Green, Pink, Lavender; Medium Darks like Blues, Teals, Greens, Violets, Browns, Purples, Maroons, Rust, and Tans. Please Note: Audition your medium dark fabrics on the black fabric; avoid purchasing fabrics that read with the same value as they will disappear in your composition.
Optional: swing arm lamp

The Clay Center will provide:

Cutting mats
Wool pressing mats
Small irons
Chaco liner pens
Power strips
Pencil and paper

Supply drop off and parking information to follow after registration. If you have further questions, please call our Box Office at 304-561-3570 or email deniselroberts@frontiernet.net or JulietArtMuseum@theclaycenter.org.
