Topical Theater Hits Charleston May 23rd!
The Elk City Playhouse/CYAC production of Dan Kehde’s new play “Farewell, Grovers Corners” is a two hour no-holds-barred condemnation of what’s wrong with America today. At times funny, poignant, angering, frustrating, and occasionally insulting, Kehde’s veteran cast attacks everything from politics to trans gender homophobia, censorship, religion, academia, capitalism, war, and American’s pervasive fear of everything else. Still, “Farewell…” brings a healthy dose of outlandish humor mixed with a well deserved cynicism for our times and is a worthy reflection of what makes most of us turn off the TV and shut down the news-feeds in utter disgust. As with all theater dealing with the topics of the day, “Farewell…” has no pretense for longevity— in fact, even as the play is in it’s last few weeks of rehearsal, the jokes and situations are quickly being replaced by news items even more bizarre than those included in the production.
The cast includes Playhouse regulars Nik Tidquist, Matty Connelly, Julia Carriger and Kayla Skidmore, as well as relative newcomers Desirae Rucker and local radio personality Josh Gaffin. All performances— May 23,24,25, 30,31 and June 1— are at 7 pm at the Elk City Playhouse, 218 Washington St. W, Elk City, Charleston. Tickets— $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors,— are available at the door on the evenings of the performances or online at cyaccharleston.ticketleap.com. The show is self rated at PG 13 for adult language and subject matter. Kazoos are optional.
