View map Free EventThe West Virginia Association of Museums is hosting a free, public keynote at its annual conference in Charleston, West Virginia, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Nancy Moses, Chair of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, will focus on the storytelling aspect of artifacts and collections and how understanding the significance and provenance of an item can enhance education and visitor experiences. Moses' address will also include relevant information from her award-winning books, Stolen, Smuggled, Sold: On the Hunt for Cultural Treasures and Lost in the Museum: Buried Treasures and the Stories They Tell, the former which will be available for sale following the address.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Nancy Moses has lived in Philadelphia since 1976, where she has been active in numerous boards and civic initiatives. She holds Bachelor and Master’s degrees in American Studies from George Washington University. Nancy Moses began her career as a Program Chief at the National Endowment for the Humanities and then went on to top management positions at WQED-Pittsburgh Public Broadcasting, the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Philadelphia Studies, and the City of Philadelphia.
As an independent consultant, and through her firm, Collaborations, Inc. Nancy has helped clients create heritage tourism entities and digital learning labs; launch international, environmental and civic initiatives; and establish new philanthropies. Her clients range from government, foundations, and national cultural treasures to community-based heritage, economic development, and service organizations. Nancy currently serves as a guest columnist for the Philadelphia Business Journal where her she profiles influential women in her "Power Lunch" column. In September 2016, Nancy was appointed Chair of the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission.
The West Virginia Association of Museums was founded in 1990. The mission of the organization has been to serve, educate, advocate for, and enhance communications within the museum community. WVAM carries out this mission by listening to its members and serving their interests and by keeping the members abreast of current standards and activities on a national scale.
While WVAM’s conference requires registration, there is no cost or registration for this keynote; it is completely free and open to the public!
