Vandalia Gathering

The Vandalia Gathering brings together the finest traditional Appalachian musicians for a weekend of great picking. Elder statesmen and young upstarts perform on stage, compete in contests and play in impromptu jam sessions all over the Capitol Complex. Visitors to the Gathering can enjoy fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitar contests outside during the day and concerts in the State Theater in the evenings. Keep your ears open!

Where were you? We attended Vandalia at the State Capital complex and witnessed dozens of musicians competing in contests at two different stages. Lots of local talent displayed. I agree that the FestiveALL at the Sheraton was a disappointment but it was NOT a part of the Vandalia festivities. We’re visitors from Philadelphia who have noting but good reviews for Charleston.

Real disappointment! Arrived Saturday about 1 pm, only activity in progress was people in food lines. The only music was from a radio station. The indoor venue at the Sheraton was quite the adventure as most everyone took the opportunity to stop in the middle of the stairs to have a reunion. What a missed opportunity to showcase local musicians and craft displays.
